Ciao Florence II: Shh, the wine is sleeping

Monday was a completely free day in Florence and a lot of the group had signed up for an excursion for a wine tour and tasting in Chianti. After our night out clubbing, it was a bit of a struggle to make the 9:45am departure, but we were all there.

We drove through Tuscany and Chianti to the Castello di Verrazzano for a tour and tasting. Even though it was rainy, it was gorgeous there. We went inside the castle to see how the wine was made and stored and saw some the the family’s private collection (lots of wine!)

Finally it was time for the tasting and a light lunch, which was made even better since the sun was out. We tried four wines including a rosé and two Chianti Classicos. For food, we had a selection of meats, which the winery also produced, including some salami and wild boar. We also had some olive oil, balsamic vinaigrette and goat cheese. The cheese and the balsamic together were heavenly! Luckily, I got extra cheese since the service originally forgot to give me the fourth wine and any cheese. It was great.

We took some pictures and then headed back on Enzo’s party bus since he was playing music. Meredith and Meredith R were dancing the whole time. It was great. We decided to stop in the little town of Greve in Chianti to walk around a bit. A lot of us decided to get some more wine and stopped at a wine bar. Luckily we were under cover before a downpour started. After about 45 minutes, we headed back to bus to go back to Florence.

In Florence, Meredith, Nicole, Callie, Adam and I walked around a bit to find a little grocery store. Being in a foreign grocery store is definitely an experience. After, we walked to a public space on a hill to get a view of the city. It was absolutely breathtaking and we could see the entire city. We hung out there for a couple hours chatting and soaking up the view before we headed back to the hotel.

We met the rest of the group there and had dinner at the hotel restaurant. We had a buffet so there was a variety of food and it was delicious. After dinner, I planned on taking a quick nap and then meeting up with everyone else, but ended up sleeping the entire night. Oh well!
