Guten tag Munich: Cool, cool, cool!

We started a rainy and cold Wednesday morning by going to the Dachau concentration camp and memorial site. It was shocking how large the camp was. It was definitely not an uplifting experience (the weather didn’t help either) but I feel like it was a once in a lifetime experience and I’m glad I went.

Next, we grabbed a quick lunch by the hotel (possibly the best falafels I’ve had in my life) and met some of the group for a bike tour through Munich.

The tour was excellent! Our guide Chris was Australian and absolutely hilarious. At the start of the tour, he declared Nico “ass man” and he had to stay at the end of the group and make sure everyone made it to the next destination. We saw a lot of historical sites and he did a great job keeping the tour interesting with his humor. The tour was about three hours long and the middle hour was spent having a beer in the English beer gardens. Probably one of the coolest things we saw was in the gardens, people surf on the river as it comes through the bottom of the city. I absolutely loved the tour (Mike’s Bikes if anyone is headed to Munich).

Next, we met everyone in the group for dinner at Augustiner. We had tomato soup, pork and potato dumplings (which I am not particularly a fan of) and a delicious apple strudel. It was a really good meal!

Then some of the group decided we wanted to go out. We went to a couple bars, one of which was tiny and I could barely move. But there I had a Munich mule which is a very refreshing drink with gin, sprite and cucumber. If you’ve ever had a Kansas City ice water at Topo in Chapel Hill, it’s kind of like that but not as hard. I loved it! From there we decided to meet up with our tour guide Chris who had told us earlier that he would be going on a pub crawl and would love to have a drink with us. We took a taxi (which nearly hit a person on a bike, causing Meredith’s “muppet face”) and made it to meet him. We went to a couple of bars with him and finished the night at a German club where we danced late into the night (after Meredith R “married” an Andy Samburg look-a-like) So fun!

No wonder we almost missed the bus the next morning….
