Before the Four

With the Final Four starting tomorrow, it’s only a matter of hours until a new champion is crowned, and sadly for me, college basketball season is over. I am still in the top spot of my bracket pool (thanks to Louisville and Michigan) and as the tournament wraps up, I wanted to take a look back. It’s been an exciting tournament so far and here are my picks for the top 4 games of the 2013 NCAA Tournament before the Final Four tips off:

4. Round of 64: Gonzaga 64, Southern University 58

Yes, I had to look up Southern University on Wikipedia late in the second half, but it seemed like the Jaguars were about to make huge history and upset #1 Gonzaga (whose seeding was debatable anyways). Unfortunately, Southern couldn’t quite pull it off, but cheering for the underdog is always fun. Which brings me to #3…..

3. Florida Gulf Coast Eagles vs. Georgetown Hoyas (Round of 64, 78-68) & San Diego State Aztecs (Round of 32, 81-71)

In just one weekend, FGCU won over the hearts of March Madness fans, first by upsetting #2 Georgetown and then by beating San Siego State to become the first #15 seed to reach the Sweet 16 ever. Dunk City was everywhere, they even had their own song! Basically every player on the team could dunk and it was great to watch a little school make history.

2. Sweet 16: Michigan Wolverines 87, Kansas Jayhawks 85 (OT)

Kansas had the game in the bag. There was 30 seconds left and they were up by 5. High fives all around! But a couple missed free throws later and a Trey Burke 3 from the parking lot, the game was tied and heading to overtime.

Yes I am bitter that the Jayhawks outed the Heels from the tournament for the second year in a row and was obviously cheering for Michigan, but fandom aside this was one of the best games of the tournament!

1. Elite 8: Louisville Cardinals 85, Duke Blue Devils 63

I’m a sports softie and there’s nothing I can do about it. This game is the ultimate sports softie game. The game had the intensity of a Final Four or National Championship game as the teams traded leads. Then, Kevin Ware went down with a gruesome leg injury early in the first half and it shook the entire Louisville team and anyone else who was watching. The Cardinals ultimately defeated Duke (YES. FINALLY.) and have since become the favorite for the National Championship.
